Akira Tendo is a 24-year-old office worker who hates his job at ZLM, a ruthless corporation that exploits its employees. He has no passion or motivation for his life, and he is unable to confess his feelings to his co-worker Ohtori, whom he has a crush on. One day, he wakes up to find that Tokyo has been overrun by zombies, and his landlord is eating one of his neighbors. He barely escapes from his apartment building and runs into the streets, where he sees chaos and carnage everywhere.
Instead of feeling scared or hopeless, Akira feels a surge of excitement and freedom. He realizes that he has been wasting his life working for a company that does not care about him, and that he has never done anything fun or meaningful. He decides to make a bucket list of 100 things he wants to do before he becomes a zombie, and sets out to accomplish them with the help of his friend Kencho, a fellow survivor and prankster.
Some of the things on Akira’s bucket list are simple pleasures, such as eating at expensive restaurants, riding roller coasters, visiting haunted houses, playing video games, and watching movies. Others are more adventurous or risky, such as driving a sports car, skydiving, surfing, exploring an abandoned amusement park, and fighting zombies with various weapons. Along the way, Akira and Kencho encounter other survivors who have their own reasons for living in the zombie apocalypse. Some of them join Akira’s quest, while others try to stop him or take advantage of him.
One of the survivors Akira meets is Shizuka Mikazuki, a beautiful and mysterious woman who saves him from a zombie attack. She is a former idol who quit her career after being harassed by her fans and manager. She is also a skilled fighter who uses a katana as her weapon of choice. She initially dislikes Akira for his carefree and reckless attitude, but gradually warms up to him as they spend more time together. She becomes Akira’s love interest and helps him cross off some items on his bucket list.
Another survivor Akira meets is Ryuji Kuroiwa, a former colleague of Akira who worked at ZLM. He is a ruthless and ambitious man who wants to take over the company and become the boss. He believes that the zombie apocalypse is an opportunity to eliminate his rivals and enemies, and he uses his influence and resources to create a private army of loyal followers. He considers Akira a traitor and a nuisance, and tries to capture or kill him several times.
As Akira progresses through his bucket list, he also learns more about the origin and nature of the zombie outbreak. He discovers that it was caused by an experimental bio-weapon developed by ZLM, which was accidentally released into the city. He also finds out that there are different types of zombies, some of which are more intelligent or mutated than others. He encounters some zombies who retain some of their human memories or emotions, such as his landlord, his former boss, and Ohtori.
Akira’s bucket list adventure reaches its climax when he decides to infiltrate ZLM’s headquarters, where he hopes to find answers and closure. He faces off against Kuroiwa and his army, as well as hordes of zombies. He also reunites with Ohtori, who reveals her true feelings for him. He manages to reach the top floor of the building, where he confronts the CEO of ZLM, who is revealed to be the mastermind behind the bio-weapon project. The CEO offers Akira a chance to join him in creating a new world order with zombies as slaves, but Akira refuses and fights him.
Akira defeats the CEO and completes his bucket list by doing the last thing he wanted to do: live for himself. He escapes from the building with Shizuka, Kencho, Ohtori, and some other survivors. They decide to leave Tokyo and look for a safe place to live. Akira reflects on his journey and realizes that he has found happiness and meaning in his life. He thanks the zombies for giving him this opportunity, and hopes that they will someday return to their human selves. He also hopes that he will never become a zombie himself.
