Death Note tells the story of Light Yagami, a brilliant but bored high school student who discovers a mysterious notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written within its pages, provided the writer visualizes their face. This notebook, the "Death Note," belonged to a Shinigami (God of Death) named Ryuk, who dropped it into the human world out of sheer boredom.
Intrigued and believing he can cleanse the world of crime, Light begins a secret crusade to create a new world free of evil, becoming a vigilante known as "Kira" (derived from the Japanese pronunciation of "killer"). He meticulously plans his killings, targeting convicted criminals initially, and quickly gains a massive following among the public who see him as a savior.
The sudden and inexplicable deaths of numerous criminals worldwide catch the attention of Interpol and the Japanese police. Unable to explain the cause of death, they seek the help of L, a highly eccentric but exceptionally intelligent and enigmatic detective whose true identity is unknown. L is the only one who suspects that Kira is responsible and that he is killing people through some unknown means, possibly involving supernatural powers.
Thus begins a thrilling cat-and-mouse game between Light and L, a battle of wits where each tries to deduce the other's identity and methods. Light uses his intelligence and the powers of the Death Note to evade suspicion while maintaining his killing spree. He learns about the various rules of the Death Note from Ryuk, such as the need to write the victim's full name and visualize their face, as well as the ability to write the cause and details of death.
L, meanwhile, uses his vast resources and deductive reasoning to narrow down the possibilities and gather evidence. He sets up an investigation team within the Japanese police force, led by Soichiro Yagami, Light's father. L's unconventional methods often clash with the police's standard procedures, but his brilliance is undeniable.
As the investigation progresses, L manages to deduce that Kira is located in Japan and that he is likely a student. He even goes as far as to publicly challenge Kira on television, a bold move that further intensifies their rivalry. Light, recognizing the danger L poses, becomes obsessed with uncovering L's real name, as knowing it would allow him to kill L with the Death Note.
The story introduces Misa Amane, a famous model who also comes into possession of a Death Note. Unlike Light, Misa is impulsive and deeply infatuated with Kira, whom she sees as her savior after he killed the man who murdered her family. Misa makes a deal with a Shinigami named Rem, trading half of her remaining lifespan for the Shinigami Eyes, which allow her to see people's true names and lifespans just by looking at them.
Misa's involvement complicates things for both Light and L. Her unwavering devotion to Kira and her possession of the Shinigami Eyes make her a valuable asset to Light, but also a potential liability. L suspects Misa's connection to Kira and places her under surveillance.
A crucial turning point in the story occurs when L manages to corner Light and Misa, placing them under house arrest under suspicion of being Kira. During this period of confinement, Light orchestrates a complex plan to temporarily relinquish ownership of his Death Note, erasing his memories of being Kira, while simultaneously manipulating events to make it appear as though someone else is now committing the killings.
This plan successfully clears Light's name in L's eyes, leading to their release. However, L remains suspicious and decides to keep Light close, even having him join the investigation team. This allows for even more intense interaction and psychological warfare between the two.
The investigation leads them to a company called the Yotsuba Corporation, where a group of executives are using a Death Note to eliminate their business rivals. L deduces that one of these executives is the current Kira. With Light's help (albeit with ulterior motives), L and the investigation team manage to identify and apprehend the Yotsuba Kira.
Through a carefully crafted plan, Light regains his memories and control of the Death Note, revealing his true identity to Rem. To protect Misa, Rem kills L and Watari, L's handler, by writing their names in the Death Note. However, by doing so, Rem violates a fundamental rule of the Shinigami, which is to not extend a human's life, and consequently dies herself.
L's death marks the end of the first major arc of Death Note. Although L is gone, his influence and the evidence he gathered continue to play a crucial role in the ongoing pursuit of Kira. The first season establishes the complex characters, the intricate rules of the Death Note, and the intense psychological battle between Light and L, setting the stage for the dramatic events of the second season.
